Shoe Try-On and Sizing

A shoe size is only honest after 4 pm, when your feet have swollen close to their largest volume of the day.

The core rule is toe space: standing, you need 1-1.5 cm between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. The longest toe is not always the big toe, so check both feet and fit to the longer one. Press the front of the shoe while standing — sitting flattens the foot and flatters the fit.

Timing is the second rule. Feet swell up to 5% in volume by late afternoon, so a shoe that feels perfect at 10 am can be tight by evening. Try on after 4 pm; a pair that passes the toe test then will pass it at any hour.

The third test is the walk. Take at least ten steps on a hard floor: the widest part of your foot should sit at the widest part of the shoe, and the heel should stay seated without lifting. Toe space checks length; the walk checks width and hold, and you need both.

Wear the socks you intend to wear with the shoes, because sock thickness changes the effective volume your foot claims. If you are between sizes, the 1-1.5 cm rule decides: the size that keeps that space at 5 pm is your size.

Shoes close the six-point check that starts at the shirt collar — the full sequence is laid out in the main fit-check guide. And because a jean's break only reads correctly over the shoe, pair this page with the jeans fit check before deciding on an inseam.
